Bancroft area hit by phone scams, says police

A new phone scam has been making the rounds in the area, according to Bancroft OPP.

A resident in the Bancroft area received a call from an unknown person saying they had won millions of dollars. The caller said the prize could only be claimed if the resident purchased gift cards and provided the security number on the back. The resident did as asked. When the caller asked for the resident to send funds through a certified cheque, the resident did so as well. Bancroft OPP was involved shortly after.

The Detachment reminds people that many scammers will claim that you have won money, and will ask for gift cards to collect the prize. Police are urging people to never provide personal or banking information over the phone, text or email unless they know for sure who it’s for. In addition, they say residents should never have to send money or buy gift cards to receive prize money at any time.
