Town planning to create Community Safety Zone in Bancroft

In an effort to slow down traffic in Bancroft, council is looking into turning a portion of Highway 28 into a Community Safety Zone.

At the latest Community Safety and Well-being Committee, a draft bylaw was proposed that would create a zone starting at the Bancroft OPP building. It will extend down Monck Street for around 700 metres, and then again to Sherbourne Street for another 400 metres. The zone would end around Bridge Street.

According to the Highway Traffic Act, speeding fines in a Community Safety Zone are doubled. Some offences, such as stunt or careless driving, can result in longer jail time and longer licence suspension.

If adopted by Council, the By-Law will be sent to the Ministry of Transportation for approval. Under the law, the changes wouldn’t go into effect until signs are erected in the new Community Safety Zone.
