Hastings County acknowledges LDD Moth tracking app issues

The fight against LDD Moths in Hastings County has hit a snag.

A resolution by the Township of Limerick had urged the County to improve its reporting of the spread of the insects also known as Gypsy or Spongy Moths. The resolution says that the reporting services the County released last year do not accurately depict the extent of the problem. Large landowners were only able to file one report with their property despite the scale of the damage, and seasonal residents were not reporting the spread at all.

The Township, supported by the Municipalities of Faraday and Hastings Highlands, wants the County to take more steps in improving the accuracy of the system. In the County’s latest Planning and Development Committee meeting, they said they recognized the gaps in the application as it relied on the public submitting personal data. However, they pointed out that the County does not have the jurisdiction to undertake a better survey.

The committee had directed staff to write to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for support. The County will also send a delegation to the Associations of Municipalities Ontario when they meet in August this year.
