This is the time of year when bears are more active in our area, so that means we need to be more vigilant. That’s the message coming from Mike McIntosh from Bear With Us Sanctuary just outside Huntsville. He says things like garbage and bird feeders are what bring bears around.
McIntosh says a bear can smell garbage or food from a few kilometers away, so it should never be outside. We’ll also start to see berries get ripe in the next couple of weeks, so when you’re out hiking with a dog, McIntosh says they should always been on a leash. He says bear attacks are extremely rare, but over half of them are caused by a dog off a leash.
