County of Haliburton working to keep off-road trails safe

The Haliburton County Rail Trail (HCRT) will be patrolled by new “Educational Patrollers.”

It’s a partnership between the Kawartha and Haliburton ATV Associations as well as the County of Haliburton.

“Working together to keep the trails safe, the volunteer patrollers are acting as trail ambassadors and will be educating and providing assistance to all users,” county officials say. “All motorized riders are required to stop for the patrollers.

Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (HKPR) District Health Unit region reports that the rate of emergency department visits for ATV/snowmobile-related injuries in the HKPR region in 2020 was 225.8 per 100,000 population, which was more than four times higher than the Ontario rate (55.1 per 100,000 population).

The rate of ATV/snowmobile-related injuries in the HKPR region has, for the most part, been steadily rising since 2014.
