South Algonquin landfills to start taking recyclable items

You can now start recycling in South Algonquin Township.

Effective immediately, the two waste collection sites are now accepting recyclable materials. Recycling containers have been installed at both the sites on Nipissing Road in Whitney and Highway 523 in Madawaska.

Residents can now drop off plastic bottles, containers and cups, glass bottles, box food and beverage cartons, aluminum and steel cans and foil, as well as newspapers, magazines and cardboard. All containers must be empty and clean, and cardboard should be flattened and dried. Shredded paper is also accepted, but only if it’s in bags.

Currently, the landfills are not accepting organic, construction or hazardous waste in their recycling. Scrap metal, wires, napkins, paper towels, styrofoam, large plastic products, diapers and personal hygiene will still be required to either be in the regular landfill or need alternative handling.
