Be aware of bears: OPP

That’s a message from Killaloe OPP, which says it’s been responding to several bear sightings in the area recently.

Police say black bears that come into populated areas aren’t always a threat to public safety.

But they say you should call 911 if the bear is acting aggressive. They say a bear sighting is an emergency if it’s entering a school yard when kids are out, stalking people or trying to enter a building.

If it’s wandering into a public gathering or killing pets or livestock, that’s also a good time to call 911.

If a bear is spotted, but doesn’t seem to be a threat, officials ask you to call Ontario’s Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327.

This could be if the bear is roaming around, checking out garbage cans, or sitting in a tree. Trained staff on the line can provide advice on what to do.

Moose FM can confirm that bears are present in our region.

A member of our news team spotted one on Monday evening in downtown Bancroft. It was in the parking lot below the Eagle’s Nest cliff and appeared headed across Highway 62 to Tim Hortons, when drivers scared it away.
