MNR to watch for Chronic Wasting Disease in deer

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is asking for help from hunters this season.

MNR has a surveillance program for chronic wasting disease, an illness that could limit the population of deer and related animals, such as moose.

A surveillance program will take place along the Ottawa River, between Arnprior and North Bay.

During the gun hunt, staff will ask for hunters’ permission to take a small sample from the brain of harvested deer. Participants will be given a collectable crest and can then see the testing results online.

MNR says that chronic wasting disease has not been found in Ontario wildlife yet, but it’s prevalent in areas of the United States, particularly the Midwest.

It says it’s important to be vigilant because the disease could cause serious harm to wildlife, hunting opportunities and the economy.

It says the surveillance program could lead to early detection and would allow for quick response if the disease is found.
