IMPACT team changing the way police respond to crisis calls

A program that is changing the way police respond to crisis calls has come to the North Hastings region. It’s already making a positive difference, officials say.

Bancroft OPP and Addictions and Mental Health Services of Hastings & Prince Edward have announced the start of the IMPACT program. It allows police officers and mental health workers to respond to calls in tandem.

The program has led to two “Co-response workers” being given offices at the Bancroft OPP detachment. Another works out of an office on Manor Lane.

Bancroft OPP Detachment Commander Jeff Mackinnon says the program is allowing police and crisis workers to ensure everyone is safe, while also providing necessary mental health support to people in crisis.

And Addictions and Mental Health CEO Jennifer Keilty-Friesen hails the program as one that can  “change the life” of a person in crisis.
