New asphalt added to Hastings Street, re-opening coming soon

Bancroft’s Main Street Makeover project has hit an important milestone, as new asphalt is now being added to the street.

The downtown route is on pace to reopen soon.

Bancroft Public Works Director Perry Kelly says he’s pleased with how it’s going.

“We’re looking at possibly mid-November to have hopefully everything open up again and being semi back to normal,” he says. “The sidewalks are all completed, the curbs are all completed, except for three tie-in areas that we have to complete. The only other thing we’re waiting for is the street lighting itself.”

On the asphalt work, he says, “we’re hoping to do the top coat (Friday) and possibly finish it up on Monday, that would mean all the paving is completed. There’s still some items that need to be completed, such as putting gravel in the amenity strip.”

Phase 1 of the project focuses on Hastings Street, between Bridge Street and the Scotiabank. Phase 2 work, between the Scotiabank and Station Street, is planned for the spring.

The roughly $4 million construction project has led to new sidewalks, curbs and gutters.

The town hopes to complete as much work as possible before the snow falls.
