Drivers can zip right through Bancroft’s main street again.
Hastings Street is now fully open, as the bulk of work in Phase 1 of the Main Street Makeover Project is complete.
The section of Hastings Street that’s been closed since September has now re-opened – and ahead of the first major snowfall, as planned.
“All the paving has been completed,” says Bancroft Public Works Director Perry Kelly. “All the amenity strips have been filled in, pedestrian fencing has been pulled down and Main Street is fully open.”
Phase 2 work could start in April. It will focus on the area of the street, between Scotiabank and Station Street.
“As soon as Mother Nature allows us, we’re thinking probably in April, we will start doing removal of sidewalks, curbs and gutters and asphalt,” Kelly says. He adds that the Phase 2 work will, hopefully, be completed by Victoria Day weekend in May.
Bancroft is spending about $4 million on the construction project; one of many items on town council’s agenda, linked to economic development.
