Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini can help people learn about securing First Nation status

If you believe you have some Algonquin heritage, but aren’t quite sure, now’s a good time to look into it.

Helping people understand the process to secure First Nation status is among the tasks on hand in 2023 for Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini Algonquin First Nation.

Robert Hunter is the representative for the group at meetings where a treaty between Algonquins of Ontario and the federal government is being negotiated.

As talks take place, the Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini First Nation wants to have accurate information on who in the community has Algonquin heritage.

They have an office at the Dungannon Recreation Centre, where people can find more information on the process. More information is also available on their website.

Hunter says the negotiation is complex and could take years. The local First Nations group is one of 10 First Nations under the Algonquins of Ontario umbrella.
