We have some great news to report for those concerned about a lack of a Warming Centre in Bancroft.
North Hastings Community Trust is now using its 19 Valley View Dr. location as a shelter. The organization announced the news on social media yesterday, just as a deep freeze was coming to town. It opened last night and kept six people safe overnight, while windchill temperatures were reaching as low as -40C.
A Facebook post from Community Trust says that running the shelter will be a challenge, but the organization can’t bear the thought of people sleeping outside in these temperatures. It says “this is a moment for our community to come together.”
Community Trust intends on keeping the shelter open every night through March and says volunteers who can help are welcome.
We’ll have more details on this story later today.
