Bancroft Horticultural Society plants new ideas for Millennium Park garden

Hope springs eternal for the garden in Millennium Park.

The site is a popular location for visitors and photographers, but the Bancroft Horticultural Society says its plants and soil are aging and need a “lifecycle refresh.”

The society’s Bruce Crouse gave a delegation to Bancroft council on Tuesday, Feb. 14,  saying club members are committed to re-vitalizing the garden.

Among the society’s new ideas are adding children’s play equipment, a spot for a Christmas tree and creating a “scenic” space  for wedding and prom photos. They’d also like to explore adding plaques to recognize donors and including Indigenous horticultural features.

Crouse says the society can spend $4,000 of its own money on the project in 2023 and its members can contribute 2000 volunteer hours towards it this year.

But he hopes the town will lend support by providing equipment and other non-monetary forms of support, such as help applying for grant money.

Mayor Paul Jenkins says the town would be “more than happy” to help.
