Grant programs for seniors proposed to Hastings Highlands council

A North Hastings woman hopes to start a non-profit that would provide programs for seniors.

Dorothy Gerrow spoke to Hasting Highlands council about the plan Wednesday. She’s proposing the municipality start a seniors community grant that could award up to $25,000 for programs.

Gerrow cited census data, which shows nearly 30 per cent of North Hastings residents are aged 65 and over. Yet, she says, there’s a lack of programs for seniors in the area.

She said a seniors organization could co-ordinate day trips or provide recreational activities. She hopes the organization could start as a pilot project in Hastings Highlands and then expand to all of North Hastings.

She also expressed worry that many seniors, who have lost spouses, are lonely at home and need social opportunities.

No decision was made at the meeting, but several councillors thanked Gerrow and expressed support for the idea.
