North Hastings schools need multi-million-dollar investments: report

Public schools in North Hastings need millions of dollars of investments to meet renewal needs.

That comes from a Hastings & Prince Edward District School Board report.

The newly-released Long-Term Capital and Accommodation Plan says just over $11 million is needed to keep North Hastings High School in shape.

Another $17 million is needed for the region’s elementary schools. They are Bird’s Creek, Coe Hill, Hermon, Maynooth, York River and the intermediate wing of NHHS

The board says the report is to outline options for consideration; it does not present any decisions.

The report also says that, with the exception of the intermediate section of NHHS, each North Hastings school has a student enrollment that is under capacity.

Superintendent of Business Services Nick Pfeiffer calls the document “a starting point for conversations and next steps.” But he also says “it’s clear the status quo isn’t an option” and “something has to be done.”
