Bark Lake tragedy prompts safety reminder

What exactly caused the death of a fisherman on Bark Lake on the weekend won’t be known for some time.

Ontario Provincial Police say the results from a post-mortem and investigation could take several weeks.

But the case is a reminder for people to stay safe on lakes, especially if they’re on ice.

Bancroft OPP Const. Joel Devenish says the OPP’s stance is that no ice is safe ice. He advises anglers that the way lakes melt could change year to year. He also encourages safety equipment.

“If you’re going out on the ice, floatation or survival suits are important,” he says. “Ice-safety picks, as well, can be a helpful tool. They don’t cost that much and anyone can carry them. If the worst case scenario happens, you can hopefully help yourself out of the ice with them.”

Ontario Fish and Wildlife has already advised anglers to start removing huts, as temperatures warm.

In our Fisheries Management Zone, they must be taken down by Friday, March 31 at the latest.
