Grass fires prompt reminder of daytime burning ban

The Bancroft Fire Department is worried that some people in the area aren’t abiding by the ban on daytime open-air burning.

Bancroft Deputy Fire Chief Matt Musclow says there have been several grass fires throughout North Hastings in the past few days. This despite the fact that most fire departments – including Bancroft – issue bans on daytime burning starting April 1.

“We have a lot of ground exposure now, with very combustible materials on the ground,” he says. “We haven’t hit our green up yet. So we want everyone to be aware that there is absolutely no day-time burning right now.  From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. no day-time burning outdoors.

“If you do choose to burn something outside right now or have any sort of open-air fire, we want people to know they’re liable for whatever happens to that fire, from the time they light it.”

Musclow says he’s not aware of those fires causing any serious damage yet, but adds that now is a worrying time for firefighters. Not much vegetation has grown yet. That means, what’s on the ground is mostly dead and flammable.
