Bancroft to recognize International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia

Four years ago Bancroft took a step to show it’s an inclusive, welcoming community and it’s prepared to do so again.

This week, council voted to recognize May 17 as International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

The vote followed the tabling of a report by Quebec-based Fondation Émergence. It said it’s reaching out to every municipality to support the day to show that governments stand with the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, Questioning and others) community.

The motion council supported also said that “despite recent efforts towards greater inclusion of LGBTQ+ people, homophobia and transphobia are still present in society.”

The vote passed with no arguments, but it did lead to a discussion about how it’s time to re-paint the “rainbow” crosswalk (pictured above) which was laid down on Station Street in 2019.

The sidewalk painting, which mimics the Pride flag, was a project of the town and youth groups, meant to show that Bancroft welcomes everyone. However, its colours have faded away over time.
