Faraday’s ‘frugal’ ways allowed for big Back Cat donation: Mayor

It was described as one of the biggest donations ever made to support health care in our region.

Faraday Township presented a cheque for $500,000 at the Back the Cat campaign launch on Monday.

The money goes to the North Hastings Fund Development Committee’s mission to purchase a CT, or Cat, scanner at North Hastings Hospital.

Faraday Township Mayor Dennis Purcell explains how his municipality, of about 1,400 people, was able to do it.

“We have wonderful staff,” he says. “We work with a minimal (number of staff). We have no payouts, significantly. We run a frugal township. And it’s thanks to many previous councils, Reeves, etc. They really watched the dollars, and we continue to do so.”

Purcell adds that Faraday’s finances were in good enough shape that its council recently passed a budget, which calls for a 1.43 per cent tax increase; a rate under inflation.

The donation by Bancroft’s western neighbour means the Back the Cat campaign has raised $2.2 million of the $2.5 million goal. The campaign is now calling on the community to close the final $300,000 gap.
