Hastings County to receive $6.14 million to address homelessness

Hastings County will receive an extra $6.14 million from the province to fight homelessness.

The funding was announced before a roundtable discussion on homelessness held in Bancroft Tuesday.

The money will be managed by Hastings County’s Homelessness Prevention Program.

It’s not clear yet how much will be funneled into North Hastings, nor what specifically it will be used for. A County official said it could be spent in a variety of ways, including on housing or more support programs.

The announcement received applause from municipal leaders, social service workers and other professionals who packed a room at the North Hastings Professional Services Building.

The roundtable was hosted by Hastings Lennox & Addington MPP Ric Bresee and featured Mental Health Minister Michael Tibollo.

Tibollo spoke about how more “community-based support” programs are needed to address homelessness.
