Bancroft should have new type of homeless shelter: Researcher

Hastings County should spend new money to address homelessness on an overnight shelter in Bancroft that differs from ones used in the past.

That from a researcher who has studied the town’s homeless population and efforts to support it.

Trent University’s Ellen Buck McFadyen authored a report that compared three types of shelters used in Bancroft up to 2022.

One was a volunteer-run church program. Another was a program that put people in motels. The third was a county program that gave people access to a room where they could stay warm, but not much else.

She said none were ideal.

“The best models for an emergency shelter are one that is not only a place to keep people warm and protect them from the elements, but also a place where supports are in place and where there are some basic elements to help people look after themselves, like hot food and a shower,” she said.  “There’s probably a model that’s somewhere in the middle.”

Buck McFadyen said, though she hasn’t studied the North Hastings Community Trust shelter used this past year, from what she has heard, it could be the best model used yet.
