New cabins, yurts available for booking at Algonquin Park

Some new cabins and yurts installed at Algonquin Park are now open for booking. The province hopes they’ll ease the high demand for overnight bookings in the iconic provincial park.

They’re at Mew Lake campground and they were announced earlier this month as part of a $3.3 million commitment from the Ontario government.

A spokeswoman for the park described the cabins as “rustic, one-room cabins” that are available year-round. They sleep up to five.

The yurts are soft-sided tent-like structures that sleep six. They have a transparent dome that provides a view of the sky.

Reservations for the cabins and yurts can be made up to five months in advance through the Ontario Parks Reservation System or by calling 1-888-ONT-PARK.

The additions come following a survey, which found that almost a third of park visitors said they would be more likely to visit in the future if more roofed accommodations were available to rent.
