Clear of COVID hurdles, Bancroft business owner predicts strong tourism summer

There are positive signs this summer will be a lucrative one for businesses that rely on cottage season tourism.

That from a Bancroft store owner, who says she’s already seeing an increase in customers, as she gets ready for Victoria Day weekend.

Sandra Nicholson, of West Wind Gallery & Gifts, says the number of shoppers out during the May-long weekend is usually a telling sign of how summer will go.

She says last year marked the return of more foreign tourists to the community following pandemic restrictions. She expects that trend to continue.

“Last year, we started seeing more American customers coming back. We started seeing more Europeans coming back,” she says. “I’m anticipating this year we’ll have a lot more tourism from overseas. That’s always great for us, through summer and through fall.”

Nicholson says the summer months are “critical” ones for Bancroft businesses, as they can earn revenue from tourists that can help them get through slower winters.
