Beware of blacklegged ticks: Public Health

Hastings & Prince Edward Public Health is warning residents about the prevalence of ticks that can cause Lyme disease.

The health unit says 98 per cent of ticks found in the jurisdiction are blacklegged, the kind that spread Lyme disease through bites.

It also says the blacklegged tick is a hard tick that lives in wooded or brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter.

Public Health offers several tips to avoid bites, such as using bug spray with DEET and covering up.

If you are bitten, you can use tweezers to remove the tick. But if the tick was attached for more than 24 hours, you should speak to a family, physician, nurse or pharmacist.

More information is on Public Health’s website.
