A transportation project by the local Algonquin First Nation is moving forward.
The Kijicho Manito Madaouskarini project is called Wàwàtesì. That’s Algonquin for firefly or lighting of the way.
The First Nation has received $75,000 for the project from the province.
The plan is to improve the downtown Bancroft section of the Hastings Heritage Trail.
That would include adding solar-powered lighting, safety features for pedestrians and recreational vehicles and accessibility features. The project will also raise awareness of Indigenous culture.
The money comes from Ontario’s Indigenous Transportation Initiative Fund, which is providing a total of $584,000 to nine projects province wide.
