North Hastings Community Cupboard stocking up for Thanksgiving and winter

No one in this community has to be hungry this holiday Monday.

North Hastings Community Cupboard is preparing a Thanksgiving dinner for those struggling to access food.

Take-out style turkey dinners will be available from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cupboard’s 2 Madawaska Valley Dr. location.

But the dinner, plus the pending arrival of winter, means this is a crucial time for the Cupboard to bring in donations. Executive Director Monica Piercey says shelves right now are low on breakfast foods and household items, such as toiletries, which the Cupboard also gives out.

“We’re finding, in general, just because of the cost of everything going up so high, that things that people could once afford, they can’t,” she says. “They wind up doing without things like toiletries, like shampoos and conditioners.”

“We’re noticing our grocery bills are going up and our numbers are going up.”

Piercey says Community Cupboard is also now preparing for its Christmas hamper program, which provides food and household items to people ahead of the winter holiday period. It will begin taking registrations for that program in November.
