This is your last week to see Bancroft’s fall colours from atop The Eagles Nest.
The park and lookout spot will close for the winter on Monday, October 16.
David Naulls, a board member for The Stewards of Bancroft Eagles Nest Park, says tourists packed the park all summer. He estimates that hundreds attended over Thanksgiving weekend and thousands came throughout the year.
That, he says, is a good sign, given the park’s importance to Bancroft’s economy. He says many tourists who come to the park also end up shopping at local stores.
Those who visit can also learn about the land’s importance to Indigenous communities.
“It’s an important part of Truth and Reconciliation, because we have the Algonquin story up there (on signs). I think that is key to educating people as to how important Algonquins are, and will continue to be, in our area.”
The park will re-open in the spring and will soon have more trails. Plans are in the works for a roughly 100-acre expansion.
