Portable warm room to arrive mid-December

A portable warm room is coming to Bancroft soon, with hopes it will help the unhoused stay safe this winter.

Bancroft officials say the warm room will be placed in the parking area of the future library building. That’s an area behind Hastings Street businesses, just off Cleak Avenue.

“While this is not a permanent, or ideal solution for our unhoused residents, it does provide some much-needed relief, from the elements of our harsh Canadian winter,” the town said in a media release.

Bancroft General Manager Andra Kauffeldt says the warm room is being provided by Hastings County officials and is expected to arrive by Dec. 15.

Town officials had been searching for an appropriate place to put the warm room for several weeks.

And people who work closely with the town’s homeless population believe there are about 25 people in the community sleeping outside, without proper shelter.
