‘Catch and release’ system hurts police morale: Bancroft

Bancroft has written to the province to advocate for a stronger justice system, calling the current one a “catch and release” system.

A letter, signed by Bancroft’s Acting Clerk Jennifer Peplinski, was sent to Premier Doug Ford and Hastings Lennox & Addington MPP Ric Bresee late last month.

It asks that the province make “meaningful” improvements to the legal system.

“We urge you to consider that the Police Services across Ontario are exhausting precious time and resources having to manage the repeated arrests of the same offenders, which, in turn is impacting their morale, and ultimately law-abiding citizens who are paying the often significant financial and emotional toll of this broken system,” the letter says.

The letter was sent at the request of Bancroft council, which, at an earlier meeting, voted to support other municipalities’ calls for a stronger legal system.
