Local group helps keep area lakes healthy with native trees and shrubs

Those who want to help protect their lake this summer can get some help from a local environmental group. The Bancroft Area Stewardship council is offering native trees and shrubs that people can plant along their shoreline. BASC board chair Ian Hendry, a local waterfront property owner, says they are a non profit which allows them to sell plants and shrubs at a lower cost.

He said the sales go towards rehabilitating the shorelines which he says are really important for the overall health of a lake.

“The shrubs and trees planted along the shoreline have deep root systems which are able to absorb a lot of the phosphates or pollutants that are going to enter into the lake” Said Hendry

Hendry says this program has been going strong for awhile:

“We’ve been doing this program for 29 years now and on an average year we sell around 8000 or so trees and shrubs”

Trees and shrubs that can still be ordered include serviceberry. black walnut. sugar maple and bitternut hickory.

Pick up will be in early  May, more details can be found at the BASC website.
