Elvis Stojko will perform at Bancroft Skating Club’s 50th anniversary event this Saturday

This Saturday The Bancroft Skating Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary and a special guest is coming to help celebrate: Acclaimed Olympic and championship figure skater Elvis Stojko will be performing at the Bancroft Arena.

Skating club president Chris Saylor says they’ve been working hard for months getting ready for the show, with performers as young as 2 and half year old, up to adult performers.

“The kids are looking forward to it. They enjoy showing off what they’ve learned they enjoy having their relatives and friends there to see them. They just love it.”

Saylor said the kids are excited by the special guest as well:

“They follow things on YouTube and on Snapchat and tik tok” Said Saylor, “They follow everything and they know perfectly well who Elvis Stojko is”

Saylor also said they weren’t necessarily expecting Elvis Stojko to agree to perform,

“Every year we all put our heads together and try and find a guest skater” Said Saylor. “One of our board members, Shannon Lynch, contacted Elvis just on a whim and he said yes”

Kids and grown ups in Bancroft aren’t the only one’s excited about the event though, My Bancroft Now had a chance to speak with Stojko on his way up to the area on Friday:

“I grew up in a small town, so its nice to get back, kind of like to your roots in a way” Said Stojko, “Coming to the different clubs and skating with the kids, I remember when I was inspired when people like Don Jackson would come–so its nice”

We asked Stojko what was next after Bancroft, he said a Stars on Ice tour with Kurt Browning, then after that–race car driving.

Elvis Stojko holds two Olympic silver medals, three world championship titles, and seven Canadian championships titles. In 1991 he became the first athlete to complete a quadruple jump combination in a world competition.

There are two shows happening tomorrow, the first at 1pm, which has sold out except for 100 tickets that will be available at the door.

There are still some tickets available for the 7pm performance.  More info can be found at the Bancroft skating club website.
