‘Za’ for all: Scrabble group seeks new members, dictionaries welcome

It was a j-o-v-i-a-l scene at the Maynooth library Thursday as the local scrabble club reunited.

According to member Gloria McAlpine the club isn’t usually able to meet in the winter.

“A lot of us were away or the weather was too poor to try and drive here” explained McAlpine.

She also added they were looking for new members and all were encouraged to come out, saying it’s not very competitive,

“There’s no pressure. We’re not that good. We just have a lot of fun. We even help each other, and we use dictionaries, so there’s no pressure to do well. So, if anybody’s interested, come out. We’d love to see you”

McAlpine also showed us her cheat sheet of two-letter words, after we asked her to name one of the most helpful two-letter words to know for scrabble.

“Well…” she thought about it for a moment “Za” for sure” she said .

When asked what the word meant the scrabble players consulted each other,

“Oh, I forget, Murielle, what’s Za?” asked McAlpine, explaining to the group that they were being interviewed,

“It’s Pizza” one member said, “It’s like a short form for pizza. My son, who’s 30, calls it that all the time. Who knew?” she said with a smile.

Scrabble club takes place at the Maynooth library from 1-4 p.m. on Thursdays.
