The Community Justice Fund is accepting applications from community groups

The Community Justice Fund has allocated money raised from criminal fines to local groups.

Fund chair Melanie Lord said the money comes from an individual who has done something that a judge feels should be punished with a fine, explained Lord.

Lord says this year the fund has $7,000 dollars to give out and she talked about what organizations can apply,

“Anyone who has a project or a program that is helping victims of crime or helping to decrease the crime incidents in the area” Lord explained.

Lord continued, explaining the allocation process:

“We don’t ourselves decide who gets the money. We make a selection committee of  individuals in the community who then look at the number of applications we get. They would decide how it gets divvied up between the different groups. And then we would award it”

Past groups who have received the fund include Maggie’s Resource Centre and North Hastings Community Trust. This year’s deadline to apply is May 24.
