Local food bank part of United Way hygiene product drive

United Way Hastings Prince Edward (HPE) are raising the alarm bell on a remarkably high need for hygiene items at area food banks and organizations.

They are launching a month-long hygiene product drive to support seven local food banks and programs for people experiencing homelessness.

“When seven organizations are in need of similar items, it makes sense that we coordinate those efforts on their behalf and avoid all seven needing to run product drives of their own,” says Brandi Hodge, Executive Director, United Way HPE.

The North Hastings Community Cupboard in Bancroft is one of the food banks supported in the drive.

Joe from the cupboard recently told My Bancroft Now that the need is higher than ever.

“Now you have two-parent households who both work, and they’re still having to come to the food bank and we’re getting more of that”

She also spoke of how donations are shared:

“So donations, you know, we’ll get spurts where we have a ton and we pass on to other food banks, and then we’ll get a little bit of a lull and then we’ll get more donations. So they’re always needed”

The Hygiene Product Drive runs from May 1-31 and is accepting donations of toothpaste, tampons, men’s deodorant, and body wash.

United Way is encouraging individuals, businesses, and organizations to participate in the drive by donating these products or organizing collection efforts within their workplaces.
