Local concert named one of ‘summers best’ by Cottage Life magazine

One of the best free concerts of the summer is right here in Hastings Highlands according to the May issue of Cottage Life.

On the Saturday of the August long weekend, while the sun sets on Baptiste Lake, The Undefined Heroes use their boathouse roof as a stage and play their one show of the year to a festive floating audience.

My Bancroft Now spoke with Jackson, the drummer for the band, about how the Cottage Life feature came about. He said they contacted their lead guitarist Sam, after he sent them information on the show.

According to Jackson it was his cousin Sam who started the band ten years ago.

“We love music as an entire family,” said Jackson. “My two cousins, Sam and Carly, came together with myself. We were the three original band members with their dad, and then a couple of years later my brother and sister both came in.”

Jackson said the idea was always just to enjoy playing music for people on the summer long weekend.

“It’s strictly for fun” says Jackson. “All we do for the concert is post on Facebook and put a tarp on the boathouse and we just kind of hope people come and it’s just kind of gotten bigger and bigger”

Jackson said at their first concert they had about 45 boats and at their last one around 85. He added that it’s more than just a boat-in concert, people gather on their docks and use all kinds of creative ways to watch the show.

“Paddle boards, swimmers with noodles, kayaks, right up to normal boats, pontoon boats and there’s a floating raft that someone has that’s super cool.” said Jackson. They just have their own floating dock that they put a motor on and they bring it in. I think there’s actually a picture in the article”

According to Jackson the band plays covers of everything from classic rock to bands like Green Day and Blink 182.

This year’s Undefined Heroes concert is set for Saturday August 3 of the long weekend.

The boathouse is in the bay next to the Baptiste Lake Marina.
