Sunday is Firefighters National Memorial Day

This coming Sunday the flags at the Hastings Highlands Municipal Office will be lowered to half-mast to honour the Firefighters’ National Memorial Day, which occurs annually on the second Sunday in September.

“Firefighters put their safety on the line in service to Canadians” The municipality said in a recent social media post. “Firefighters’ National Memorial Day will allow us to commemorate those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. We appreciate the sacrifice and commitment of firefighters in this country and what they do for their local communities.”

The day was first established in 2017 as a tribute to the firefighters who risk their lives to keep Canadians safe.

The Government of Canada states they recognize the dangers firefighters often face when carrying out their duties, and the ultimate sacrifice of firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty.

“Firefighters’ National Memorial Day will commemorate their courage, their selflessness, and their unwavering commitment to serving our communities.”

On the day all federal buildings lower their flags to half-mast.
