There are no announcements yet from potential candidates to succeed Justin Trudeau as Liberal party leader and Prime Minister.
Trudeau announced his resignation yesterday, saying if he has to fight internal battles within the party, he can’t be the best option in the coming election, which must be held by October.
Trudeau has been leader of the party since 2013 and Prime Minister since 2015.
After yesterdays announcement, MooseFM took to the streets to ask people what they felt about Trudeau’s resignation. From thrift stores to grocery stores, libraries to retirement residences, here are a few things people had to say:
“I think its a really wonderful idea that Mr. Trudeau retires.”
“He’s not looking out for anybody in Canada at all as far as I’m concerned. You know, especially with the homeless thing that’s going on, it’s just awful.”
“For the longest time I thought he was fine, but his party is totally against him. The majority of them are, so I would have to go along with that.”
“It’s about time and I hope that the next leader that comes in isn’t as corrupt as he is…from the WE scandal to what they did to Jody Raybould”
“I’m glad he’s going”
Not everyone MooseFM spoke with wanted to share their thoughts about Trudeau, however, with some saying they now chose not to engage with politics.
“To be honest I feel a little bit shameful that I don’t (follow politics) …I consciously choose to stay out of that world because there’s just so much push and pull that it’s like, ‘wait, just let me process this. Let me just take this and process it and digest it’.”
Currently, two of the top possibilities to replace Trudeau are former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who quit last month after Trudeau planned to replace her, and former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney.
Both Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh say it doesn’t matter who the next leader is, the Liberal party itself has let down Canadians.
