Strengthening community one gathering at a time at new potluck event

A community potluck on Saturday is aiming to bring people together.

Any Dillabough, co-organizer of the event, says that after seeing people become more isolated in the wake of COVID, she hopes to help them connect again.

“Community is very, very important at this time and with the last couple of years, it seems like everybody’s been divided and many people kind of sit at home alone. So I felt a very strong urge to put something together.”

This potluck should be the first in a series of monthly community gatherings. Dillabough says it’s a casual event and everyone is welcome.

“It’s for everybody, bring your family member or your mom that’s sitting at home or your dad that’s at home. Just come and hang out.  We‘ll have a snack, we’ll have a chat, share some ideas.”

After she got the idea for the event, Dillabough says she created a flyer, going door-to-door in Bancroft and surrounding areas

“The replies from people were very positive and excited and many said that we definitely do need this and thanked me for doing it …and so I’m really hoping for a nice turnout.”

Dillabough hopes the gathering will become a monthly event, and says she’d love to expand it into doing things such as having a community bonfire or dance.

“And it’s open to ideas from others, if other people want to chime in and take over and help out. …it takes a village and this is just the start of, as the flyer says, building a stronger community, one gathering at a time.”

The community potluck takes place from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Faraday Community Centre.

Guests can drop by anytime. Donations of food, clothing or cash to help community members in need are welcome.
