The Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year as its often called, starts today.
According to Time and Date, this year is the ‘year of the snake’, representing wisdom, transformation and intuition. They note that Lunar New Year celebrations span across China, Korea, Vietnam, as well as global Asian communities.
It is a time when families and friends gather to share meals and take part in rituals that are meant to attract good fortune.
This includes decorating with red, giving “lucky money” in red envelopes, and watching dragon or lion dances.
For those looking to celebrate in our area, the library in Barry’s Bay is hosting a Chinese New Year craft making event on this Fridays PA day.
The library says they will read stories, make lanterns, play bingo, and there “may be some special red envelopes for participants to have good luck in the new year”
Those who wish to attend can register by calling or emailing the library in advance as space is limited.
The PA day craft-making event takes place from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m.
Call the library at 613-756-2000 or email [email protected] to sign up.
