Several federal cabinet ministers are in Washington today, as they make a last-minute attempt to avert the 25 per cent tariffs on all Canadian imports threatened by President Donald Trump.
Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly, Public Safety Minister David McGuinty and Immigration Minister Marc Miller are meeting with senators and members of Trump’s team.
But Trump himself says the tariffs will go ahead tomorrow.
He has yet to decide whether oil will be exempted, saying that’ll depend on the price.
Trump has claimed the penalties would be put in place unless Canada cut the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants across the border.
Now, he says it’s in retaliation for the large trade deficit, where Americans are buying more from us than we are from them.
