Just after 1 p.m. Wednesday, Kawartha Lakes OPP received a call regarding an elderly male.
OPP officers were dispatched to the location and took a male into custody to be transported to the hospital without incident.
During the investigation, a historical wartime grenade was discovered, along with other weaponry.
OPP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) was contacted, who in turn consulted with the Department of National Defence.
OPP Officers evacuated near-by residents “as a precaution” and had the elementary school in the area placed on a hold and secure.
After consulting with the EDU team, the hold and secure was lifted and the incident was isolated to the involved residence.
OPP say that a Bomb Tech from Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Trenton attended, safely removed the grenade and took it for disposal.
The other weaponry was seized by OPP officers.
The City of Kawartha Lakes OPP reminds community members that, if ever in a similar situation where weapons or explosives are located, do not attempt to dispose of them yourself. Contact the OPP immediately, move to a safe location and ensure that no one else gets close. EDU members are trained in the safe handling and disposal of explosives to ensure public safety.
