Warning issued to those with ice fishing huts near Bath, ahead of cement ships passage

OPP and the Canadian Coast Guard are warning ice fisherman with huts in Bath/Amherst Island area, that a large ship will be passing through and de-stabilizing the ice.

Cement carrier vessel MV Sunnanvik is approaching the Lafarge cement facility in Bath at around 6 a.m. this Saturday. It had initially been expected to arrive earlier but was delayed by a storm.

OPP note that there are numerous huts on the ice in the area.

“The ice will become dangerously unstable due to the passage of the boat, which will approach from the west side of Amherst Island. It is strongly recommended that the huts be removed before Saturday and that no one be present on the ice Saturday morning. This will affect ice stability across a wide area.”

MV Sunnanvik is a cement carrier with a deadweight of over 8,000 metric tonnes.

It currently operates in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway.

MV Sunnanvik is the first cargo ship equipped with sails to navigate on the Great Lakes, harnessing wind energy and thereby contributing to lower emissions.
