It’s International Women’s day tomorrow and women and girls of all ages are invited to the North Kawartha Library in Apsley to celebrate.
The library will be marking the day by hosting a make your own ‘Power Portrait’ workshop.
This project is inspired by the signature portrait style of Mexican artist Victoria Villasana.
Villasana rose to prominence embroidering pop culture images, creating works that often reflect empowerment.
Library program coordinator Lisa Mace says she was inspired by the work, wanting to share it’s strength and positivity.
“I thought how can I bring this to our community?”
Mace says she tried out her own portraits in preparation for the event, where participants will pose for photos and then use colourful threads to accent the portraits.
“[In the first portrait] I have my arms up in the air and i’m shooting rainbows and love from my fists” said Mace, laughing, “It was really fun to do.. and then in another one, I embroidered the heart in my hand and then put hearts above me… because I think, now more than ever, we need to lead with love.. I think that’s also very powerful for women.”
Another important aspect of the event, says Mace, is bringing people of all ages together.
“That’s where our strength comes from, we learn from our elders…and I think that’s been lost. I think that older women right now, they’ve been through hard times, they’ve struggled before…so we need to learn from them and come together. Their foundation of strength is what we can build upon.”
Mace adds that kids and grown-ups of all ages will be at the event.
“I think it’s such a great opportunity for us all to come together.”
There is no cost but pre-registration is required by calling or emailing the library.
