Helping turtles and pollinators with Milkweed Extravaganza fundraiser

Think Turtle Initiative has launched their Milkweed Extravaganza, a fundraiser that not only helps pollinators but will also support the volunteer-run conservation organization.

Kelly Wallace says the initiative, which works hard to protect turtles and their habitats, met an unexpected set-back recently when their storage shed collapsed under the weight of snow after the last big snowstorm.

“This shed housed essential supplies and equipment for our nest protection efforts, and without it, our work this season will be much more challenging. Your support will help us rebuild so we can be prepared to protect turtle nests in the months ahead.” says Wallace.

Wallace says she will be at this weekend’s Seedy Saturday event in Maynooth with seeds available to purchase including a variety of ‘red’ milkweed.

“It’s native to to Ontario and it flourishes in wetter environments like damp meadows, marshes, the edges of ponds, wetlands. And we’re hoping there are people out there that think, ‘hey, we could introduce this to our properties’ It’s sort of a nice way to add some vibrant color, and also help to fill out an important ecological niche.”

The seeds are from trusted Ontario supplier Bee Kissed Seeds.

The price is $4.50 per package (30 seeds, including sowing instructions).

To learn more or purchase seeds, head to Seedy Saturday this weekend in Maynooth, or contact Think Turtle Initiative.

You can find more information from Kelly Wallace on how to purchase seeds just below, or on the Think Turtle initiative  website.
