Bee baths, turtles and more at Seedy Saturday event in Maynooth

From bees to butterflies, all aspects of sustainable gardening were celebrated at this weekend’s seedy Saturday event, which saw a steady stream of people at Maynooth’s Emond Hall.

Seed vendors lined the gym and a large ‘exchange table’ in the middle offered the chance to take numerous varieties of seeds home to plant while some people brought their own saved seeds to leave at the table.

Along the back wall paints were lined up and gemstones glittered at the Bee Bath Making Station.

Local homeschooler Meredith explained the process of making the bee baths out of small terracotta pots.

“We have waxed the inner part of this pot(base) so that we can put these stones in that are safe for the bees. Bees land on the stones and drink the water that we pour in here, and then we decorate this in bright colors so that the bees are attracted to it.”

Kelly Wallace from Think Turtle initiative had a booth set up, raising funds and awareness for turtle conservation while also protecting pollinators, selling seeds in the Milkweed Extravaganza fundraiser.

A hot meal and baked goods were served in the kitchen by Maynooth baker and chef Opal Lewis, while next door, inside the library, a terrarium workshop got underway at 1 p.m.

This was the 11th Seedy Saturday event in Maynooth and the first one since Covid.
