Half of the people killed in off-road vehicle crashes last year were not wearing helmets, and nearly as many were under the influence of alcohol or drugs, say OPP.
New data released during ATV Safety Awareness Week shows that 18 of the 34 people who died in OPP-investigated incidents in 2024 were not wearing a helmet.
Another 15 fatalities involved alcohol or drug use.
The OPP has partnered with the Ontario Federation of ATV Clubs (OFATV) to promote safer riding practices across the province during the week-long ATV safety week campaign.
In addition to always wearing an approved helmet and riding sober, the OPP is urging off-roaders to avoid speeding and stay within their skill level — particularly on unfamiliar or uneven terrain.
“Please remember to pull over safely and stop and speak with the officers,” said Sgt. Trevor Pitts of the Bancroft OPP. “And I just want to stress with the alcohol — have zero alcohol out there. Even one drink can impair your ability. We really want to keep people safe, have fun out there leading into the summer, and we just hope everybody has a great time riding the ATVs on our trails and highways.”
The OPP also reminds parents and guardians to enroll interested youth in Ontario’s online ATV Training Course for Youth.
Officials say following safety best practices and keeping vehicles properly maintained are critical steps in making sure riders return home safely after every ride.
ATV Safety Awareness Week runs from May 30-June 8.
