“It’s out of our hands”: Major recycling changes in Bancroft starting July 1

Starting July 1, recycling in Bancroft will look a lot different for residents and businesses.

Due to new rules from the Ontario government, the Town of Bancroft will no longer collect recycling.
Instead, recycling for residents will be handled by a private company through a new provincial program run by Circular Materials.

However, downtown businesses and most non-profits will not be included in this program. They will have to make their own arrangements and cover the cost of recycling pickup.

Locations include private businesses, daycares, churches, municipal buildings like libraries and arenas, and not-for-profit groups such as food banks.

Town of Bancroft residents will no longer be able to bring recycling to the town’s waste site. Only commercial businesses will be allowed to use the site for recycling after July 1. And they will have to pay a fee.

Bancroft Mayor Paul Jenkins says the town is unhappy with the changes brought about by the province but it is out of their hands.

“The town had a really good recycling system that took care of everybody. But unfortunately the province has changed the legislation and we’re out of it now.”

Jenkins noted some downsides to implementing the new recycling system.

“It’s caused a lot of confusion and has cost the town approximately $200,000 a year,” said Jenkins,  referencing the loss of revenue from recyclables the town collected.

Residents and business owners who are concerned about the changes can contact their local MPP.

More information is available at the Town of Bancroft website.

The province plans to fully roll out its new recycling system across all of Ontario by January 1, 2026.
