‘Like the Rogers Centre on top of us’: Heat dome descends on Ontario as temperatures soar into the 40s

A heat warning that began on Sunday is expected to remain in effect across much of Ontario until at least Tuesday night, according to Environment Canada.

Dave Phillips, senior climatologist with the agency, likened the weather pattern to the closed dome of the Rogers Centre descending on the province, saying,

“It’s like there’s a dome over Eastern North America—high pressure traps the air, causing it to sink. When it sinks and heats up…there’s just no relief.”

Environment Canada has labeled the current conditions as dangerous, with humidex values climbing into the mid-40sin some regions.

The agency is urging residents to take proper precautions such as staying indoors, drinking plenty of fluids and checking on vulnerable people, including seniors, children, and those living alone.
