OPP warn about possible paving scam in Peterborough County

OPP are warning residents in Peterborough County to be cautious following reports of a possible paving scam in the Havelock-Belmont-Methuen area.

According to police, a local resident contacted the Peterborough County OPP on June 18 to report that a contractor going door to door had offered to pave their driveway for $6,000.

The homeowner agreed and paid, but said the newly paved driveway began deteriorating the very next day.

Police say other homeowners in the same neighbourhood may have also been approached or received similar work.

The OPP are reminding the public that scams like this happen regularly. They remind the public that if an offer sounds too good to be true, it likely is and that reputable contractors rarely go door to door for business. They encourage residents to always research contractors before signing and say that if you do suspect a scam to contact your local police.

Anyone who believes they have been targeted or defrauded is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
